<\/a><\/p>\nBehold the apples\u2019 rounded worlds:<\/span><\/address>\njuice-green of July rain,<\/span><\/address>\nthe black polestar of flowers, the rind<\/span><\/address>\nmapped with its crimson stain.<\/span><\/address>\n <\/span><\/p>\nThe russet, crab and cottage red<\/span><\/address>\nburn to the sun\u2019s hot brass,<\/span><\/address>\nthen drop like sweat from every branch<\/span><\/address>\nand bubble in the grass.<\/span><\/address>\n <\/span><\/p>\nThey lie as wanton as they fall,<\/span><\/address>\nand where they fall and break,<\/span><\/address>\nthe stallion clamps his crunching jaws,<\/span><\/address>\nthe starling stabs his beak.<\/span><\/address>\n <\/span><\/p>\nIn each plump gourd the cidery bite<\/span><\/address>\nof boys\u2019 teeth tears the skin;<\/span><\/address>\nthe waltzing wasp consumes his share,<\/span><\/address>\nthe bent worm enters in.<\/span><\/address>\n <\/span><\/p>\nI, with as easy hunger, take<\/span><\/address>\nentire my season\u2019s dole;<\/span><\/address>\nwelcome the ripe, the sweet, the sour,<\/span><\/address>\nthe hollow and the whole.<\/span><\/address>\n \u2014Laurie Lee<\/em><\/p>\n For Botany today we wander the apple orchard, examining the branches with their swelling fruit; then we sit beneath one of the trees and draw.
