From her beacon-hand<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">\u201cKeep ancient lands, your storied pomp!\u201d cries she<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">With silent lips. \u201cGive me your tired, your poor,<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">I lift my lamp beside the golden door!\u201d<\/span><\/address>\n<p><em>\u2014Emma Lazarus <\/em><\/p>\n<p>In celebration of the birthday of Emma Lazarus (1849-1887) today, I post what is probably her most famous poem, written to help raise funds for the installation of the Statue of Liberty, and which now graces that monument. I had hoped to write a bio as part of the post, but today\u2019s schedule does not allow it, so the bio will have to wait. Please check back in 2011.
