This coming Sunday, October 28th, is the last day that Fletcher\u2019s Boathouse<\/a> will be open for canoe rentals. I had hoped for an end-of-season family excursion gliding up the Potomac River to gaze at autumn color, hawks and herons, and lichen-covered boulders reflected in the leaf-sprinkled water. However, it looks as if all will be rained out (or possibly snowed in) with the approach of Tropical Storm Sandy, which is already wreaking havoc further southeast. Let\u2019s hope it’s short-lived.<\/p>\n

Here is a poem for this bright and watery season.<\/p>\n

\"Fletchers\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Another year gone, leaving everywhere
\nits rich spiced residues: vines, leaves,<\/p>\n

the uneaten fruits crumbling damply
\nin the shadows, unmattering back<\/p>\n

from the particular island
\nof this summer, this NOW, that now is nowhere<\/p>\n

except underfoot, moldering
\nin that black subterranean castle<\/p>\n

of unobservable mysteries\u2014roots and sealed seeds
\nand the wanderings of water. This<\/p>\n

I try to remember when time\u2019s measure
\npainfully chafes, for instance when autumn<\/p>\n

flares out at the last, boisterous and like us longing
\nto stay\u2014how everything lives, shifting<\/p>\n

from one bright vision to another, forever
\nin these momentary pastures.
