Ka-Boom!

To kick off July, a poem by John Updike.

Bang-bang! Ka-boom!
We celebrate
Our national
Independence date,

The Fourth,
with Firecrackers and
The marching of
The Legion Band.

America:
It makes us think
Of hot dogs, fries,
and Coke to drink.

The shade is hot
The little ants
Are busy, but
Poor Fido pants

And Tabby dozes
In a pool
Of fur she sheds
To keep her cool.

—John Updike

Hill Center Exhibition

My gun control comic, “Thoughts and Prayers,” has been accepted into the Hill Center Galleries annual regional exhibition. I don’t know how THAT’s going to look hanging among the paintings and sculpture. But I’m glad it’s there. The opening reception is Wednesday, June 27th, 6:30 to 8:30pm. Come one, come all!

If you can’t make the reception, and do not already know the Hill Center on Capitol Hill, located in the renovated Old Naval Hospital, you ought to check out its wonderful series of events and activities.

Walking with Our Children

On the eve of our departure (see June 7th) I finished last adjustments to the design and illustrations and sent off the files for a new book by early childhood educator Nancy Blanning. Walking with Our Children: The Parent as Companion and Guide is a collection of essays on practical and enjoyable ways to approach parenthood with courage and a sense of freedom. Published by the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America.
